The internet isn't a series of tubes, but we forget: it does physically exist. (As Google's terrifying Artic data hub proves.) And it physically exists in New York! And makes all of your careers possible! Here's a great dorky/awesome video about the Internet in NYC.

  • Work Submission: Boxer's O'Flahavan Mounts A Broom For Real-World Quidditch

    / Comments (0)

Director Lawrence O’Flahavan and Boxer Films attempt to capture the real-world magic of Quidditch in the 30-minute documentary “Brooms Up!” which follows the 2010 International Quidditch Association’s 4th Annual World Cup. In other words, a bunch of Harry Potter nerds attending expensive liberal arts colleges run around on brooms, while attempting to participate in a sport that doesn’t actually exist. Meanwhile, their parents wonder where that $50,000 a year for tuition is going.

The translation of this fantasy game into a real life competition has brought thrills to veteran and novice teams alike. Originating with the first World Cup between Middlebury College in 2007 and Vassar College, the intercollegiate competition has picked up a frenzied momentum and rapidly developed into a fierce intercollegiate competition between over 100 teams for this year’s event on November 12-13, 2011 at New York City’s Randall Island.

Much like its fictional predecessor, Quidditch matches are played between two teams of seven players “riding” non-magical broomsticks, using four balls and six elevated ring-shaped goals (three on each side of the pitch), attempting to score at each goal while avoiding obstacle from opposing offensive players.

The game ends when a player catches the human snitch, who "craftily defies all rules to ensure that the players do not catch them," whatever that means.

Just this morning, these United States of America received its first-ever global consumer branding: Discover America. The new design comes courtesy of The Brand Union and the newly re-titled Brand USA Inc. (formerly the The United States Corporation for Travel Promotion). The Brand Union and Brand USA Inc. hope the rebranding will boost U.S. tourism. Our economy could use it.

According to The Brand Union, the new design captures the spirit of the US – authentic, optimistic, unexpected, inclusive, endless possibilities – and represents the diversity of the American experience. A full advertising campaign, led by JWT, will be launched in March of 2012.

If the pictures of MKTG's secret bar that we posted this morning got you all hot and bothered, you'll love the newest creation from Arnold: A BEER VENDING MACHINE. Awesome.

The vending machine was the baby of their $100,000 "Make Project," which encourages employees to "manage less and make more." And what a sweet thing they made. This vending machine has 6 different types of beer, knows your name, talks to you, and even lets you tweet from it. ("@myboss Whoo drunks machine beer vending office!")
