• Work Submission: David&Goliath (D&G) Has Teamed Up With Blake Griffin in a New Kia Optima Spot

    / Comments (0)

What’s a NBA player to do during a lock out? Well, if you’re Blake Griffin you use your star power and personality to help sell that car you dunked over at last year’s slam dunk contest, the Kia Optima, while doing some unnaturally awesome things that will surely get you laid.

The spot, titled “Time to Shine,” features a humorous fantasy dunk that takes Griffin’s dunking over an Optima stunt to crazy new heights. Check it out:

    Dan Kelly, D&G copywriter, commented:

“The creative was inspired by two things: the highly-publicized Kia Optima Dunk and Blake Griffin’s off-court personality. After researching Blake and meeting with him in person, we soon came to realize how funny he really is. He has a very dry sense of humor and is extremely comfortable in front of the camera. We got to work right away creating a campaign that utilized both his personality and Kia’s.”

Apparently this is just the first commercial of a larger campaign with Griffin. And why not? It’s not like he’s going to be playing professional basketball any time soon.

  • Tony Effik to Head Media & Connections at R/GA

R/GA just made a nice snag, as industry veteran Tony Effik has joined the agency as managing director. Effik’s role at R/GA will involve evolving the agency’s current media capabilities, working closely with strategy, creative and digital advertising teams.

Effik was most recently SVP of strategy and analytics at Publicis Modem, where he was previously chief strategy officer working out of Publicis Modem’s London offices. He will report to Dawn Winchester, EVP, chief marketing services officer at R/GA. Winchester had this to say about Effik: “Tony has a unique and refreshing perspective on media and connections, given his diverse background and involvement in several different areas of our business, including planning, strategy, and social. It is his multifarious set of experiences that makes him the perfect fit to lead the global team.”

  • TechStars Startup "Ambassador" Could Mean Big Things for Brands

    / Comments (0)

One of NY TechStars hopefuls, Ambassador, is hoping to change the way brands interact with their customers.

Ambassador aims to bring brands and their followers together, offering rewards to brand ambassadors in exchange for referrals (read: free advertising) through social media. It also allows brands to track and manage these ambassadors. Ambassador means business: They already have 15,000 brand ambassadors and are solidly funded (they’ve raised $600,000 already and are aiming for $800,000 after their TechStars demo).

    Here’s how it works:

Businesses can create campaigns in Ambassador and test them out in “sandbox mode.” These campaigns “dictate the measurable action you want to happen along with a reward that will incent your Ambassadors.”

Ambassador generates a unique URL for each Ambassador. Brands can then then run multiple campaigns and track their progress.

Ambassador also options brands a variety of payment plans, with different services such as integration consultation, custom landing pages and advanced customer insights available in the more expansive (and expensive) plans.

Ambassadors can earn rewards for brand loyalty. When they sign up they are prompted to select their interests. They are then encouraged to promote their favorite brands through social media upon making a purchase and are rewarded every time someone visits the link they’ve posted and completes a campaign action.

Basically Ambassador allows brands to activate brand activists as word-of mouth marketers through social media, while offering a clear and lucrative rewards system. It's ingenious because both brands and Ambassadors benefit--let's just see if they can scale.

  • The Craziest New Publishing Startup

Small Demons wants to bring you into the Storyverse. What exactly is the Storyverse, you ask? Well, it's seems to be e-books where the background on every detail (songs, movies, restaurants) is instantly accessible, and you can see where those details recur in other works of literature. Who knows if the user experience will be any good, but their intro video is f*cking awesome. Props on that alone.

At the very least, it seems like it'll be an interesting research tool.

  • Myhren, Crowley Crack Fortune's 40 Under 40

The NY Tech and NY Ad world each got some representation in Fortune's "40 Under 40" feature today. Grey NY's President/CCO made it at 37, and Foursquare Founder Dennis Crowley checked in at 29. Sorry, that was an awful pun. But it was too easy.

Congrats to both men. I'm sure they'll get really good sex out of this, one way or another.

  • Work Submission: Chevy Launches Social Media-Powered Bungee Jumping Car

    / Comments (0)

Want to know an effective way to get attention from consumers? Launch your new, several thousand pound product off of a 100 ft. tower.

Yesterday, Chevy did just that with their new compact vehicle, the Sonic. Goodby, Silverstein & Partners orchestrated the stunt and live streamed the excitement from LA on Let’sDoThis.com. The power was in the users' hands as they were invited to visit the website and 'click' to push the Sonic closer to the edge.

Several hours and 2,400,000+ clicks later, the car made the plunge where it was caught by bungee cables attached to a hydraulic crane, creating a social media-powered bungee jumping car. Visit the site to see the car dive.

Word is, the initial plan was to drive the Chevy to a levy but the levy was dry. Okay, so that's false, but don't pretend that that song doesn't always slip into your mind when you hear Chevy. Well, it's either that or an endearing mental image of Chevy Chase's dimple chin.
