The folks who brought you Pros & Cons of Social Media in Education and A Teacher's Guide to Social Media have released a follow-up infographic detailing social media's growing role in the college admissions process.

The infographic shows how colleges are relying more and more on social media to find and screen potential candidates; 85% of colleges use Facebook to recruit students and 22% of undergrad admissions offices look up applicants on Facebook. That means you might want to remove those offending alcohol pics or profanity-laden posts if you want to get in to the school of your choice.

  • Vitro Sizes Up Alaska

    / Comments (0)

For the latest Alaska Communications commercial, Vitro created a sixty-second spot that shows off the wide-ranging beauty in America’s largest state. Throughout the video, the camera angles downward at a birds-eye-view as we see a series of short clips: cars driving in a city, a seaplane landing on water, people visiting a waterfall.

The scenery is so vast and incredible, and the ad does a good job of focusing on Alaska’s diverse landscapes as the selling point. We realize that connecting individuals in these remote locations is a challenging task, and any company that is up for the job must know what it’s doing. However, the sped-up action and the distant camera angle make all of the people in the commercial look like tiny Lego figurines darting across the screen. The effect could be cool, if you still like Legos.

Based off of the advertisement, I’m not sure I’d want to switch to Alaska Communications if I moved to Anchorage, but after seeing the landscapes, I definitely want to visit Alaska. I suppose that’s something…

Both schools and offices alike are embracing the BYOD (bring your own device) strategy, as letting students and workers use their own mobile devices is an easy way to save a lot of money. And most people are more comfortable using their own devices than ones issued by their school or employer anyway. But there are drawbacks to the strategy, too. Some students or employees might not be able to afford the necessary devices, and applications and tools might not be universal across all platforms. For a detailed vision of the pros and cons of BYOD, and a look at who has embraced the strategy, check out the infographic below.

Yet students demand fast Internet: 64% of college students said they would consider relocating if their dorm's Internet speeds were too slow. Which devices are eating up the most bandwidth? How many devices does the average college student have connected to the Internet at a time? Check out the infographic below for answers to these questions and other illuminating information about the battle for bandwidth on college campuses.

Ever wished you could have a top-notch advertising mentors? Now you can with Hindsight, a video series focused on career wisdom for people in creative fields created by former OgilvyOne Worldwide CCO Mat Zucker, executive producer Andrea Leminske and director David Gaddie of The Colony.

The team shares what they wish they had known when they were starting out, moments in their career they’re proud of, and stories of early mentors who gave them valuable advice that helped advance their careers. It’s somewhere for new creatives to come for wisdom and advice, as well as something more established professionals can lean on when they’re running low on inspiration.

Interviewees come from across the creative fields, mostly advertising, design, media, technology and production. The first ten videos include appearances by DDB New York CCO Matt Eastman, Collins CEO Brian Collins, and JWT Executive Creative Director Sarah Barclay -- among many others.

“Agencies rarely do enough to guide creative folks,” explains Mat Zucker. “Yet I’ve always found that people at every level are hungry for wisdom from those ahead of them.”

Grateful for the help he’s received along the way, Zucker sees Hindsight as a way to pass on wisdom and experience to the next generation. In such a competitive field, where people are often reluctant to share their personal insights, they’re sure to appreciate it.

  • Durex Beats the International Olympic Committee

Can combining the Olympics, contraception, and the threat of premature ejaculation be funny? Of course, and with this billboard, Durex has given us the best advertising campaign associated with the London Games thus far.

I’m sure the IOC is thrilled that the rings will now be associated with colorful condoms, but as Hope Solo revealed two weeks ago, the Olympic Village ends up resembling a giant orgy of super-athletes. Thanks to Durex, we will have to wait a little longer for the super-athletic babies.
